One skein? You should just knit a cowl.

I love a good skein of self-patterning yarn. There may be one or five in my stash right now. But have I made anything with them?
Nope!
But when I saw this specific skein of Arne & Carlos Socks & More 4 ply - which radiadeted all the joyful 80's vibes for me - I really just wanted to knit a cowl.

So...that's exactly what I did!
And let me tell you...I really love it! I thought you might love it, too, so I wrote it up and published it in my Ravelry and Etsy shops.
Measuring 6.5" wide by 34" around, this double-thick cowl is simply stitched and the pattern with the Arne & Carlos yarn just happens, sort of like magic. I tested out a few different cast on lengths, and the largest size of the pattern was a true winner. There is something so satisfying as the yarn changes color as it is knit. The yarn brings the excitement to the simple stitching of the pattern.
While this works best with the Arne & Carlos Socks & More 4 Ply, it can be knit with any skein of fingering weight yarn. I've graded the pattern for knitting with a 400 or 420 yard skein which will give you a 5.5" or 6" wide cowl respectively (you should still get to a 34" circumference if you're on gauge). Of course, the patterning and pooling will look different depending on how the yarn is dyed up but hey...I think that's part of the fun! This is really the type of pattern where a beautiful yarn color takes the lead.
Just knit a cowl, then block it and wear it with joy!
Big thanks to Arne & Carlos for delighting our needles with these beautiful colorways.
